The Day I Tried to Find That Instagrammable Tuscan Road

There are many beautiful things about living in Tuscany, but one of the most amusing is discovering that half the iconic photos everyone posts are almost impossible to find in real life. You know the ones: the winding road framed by perfect cypress trees, the S-shaped curve glowing at sunset, the long driveway that looks like it leads straight into a Renaissance painting. People send me these photos constantly. “Where is this road?” “Is this near Podere La Svolta?” “Can we take this exact picture when we visit?” And I always give the same honest answer: Possibly. Maybe. It depends. Tuscany has many roads that look almost—but not exactly—like this one. But last week, I decided to play tourist for a day and go hunting for this mythical “Instagram road.” Just for fun. No schedule, no plan, just a mild obsession and a tank full of fuel.
I should have known it wouldn’t be straightforward. The first time I passed it, I didn’t realise I had passed it. Tuscany does that—it hides beauty in plain sight. You look away for a moment to adjust your music or sip your water, and suddenly you’ve driven right past the thing you were chasing. But I had a feeling, so I circled back, turned onto another tiny gravel path, found myself in front of a farmhouse, apologised to a confused elderly man, and tried again. As soon as I rejoined the main road, I saw it.
Not the road from Instagram.
Not the exact angle.
But something even better: a quiet stretch of winding cypress-lined beauty that nobody was photographing, nobody was staging, nobody was performing for. Just a road being itself. I slowed down.
Stopped the car.
Took a photo.
And laughed, because of course this wasn’t the road—but it didn’t matter.
Still, the challenge had begun. So I kept going. About ten minutes later, I spotted a curve that looked suspiciously familiar. My heart did that small, triumphant jump. I turned around again (this was becoming a theme), came back from the opposite direction, and—yes—there it was. The road. The angle was right. The slope was right. The cypress trees were lined up like they’d been groomed for a magazine shoot. This was the one people screenshot, save, and send to each other with the caption “Tuscany goals.”
Finally, after two attempts and three unnecessary U-turns, I parked safely and got out. The light was perfect. The hills glowed in that golden, honey-coloured way Tuscany seems to reserve only for people who aren’t rushing. The trees stood tall, silent, ancient. For a moment, I just looked. Then I took the picture, of course. I’m not above it. But something funny happened: as beautiful as the photo was, the reality felt even better. It wasn’t about capturing the road; it was about the experience of stumbling into beauty twice—once accidentally and once by stubborn determination. And it made me understand something I’ve witnessed again and again at Podere La Svolta: people arrive expecting the postcard version of Tuscany, but the real magic happens in between the curated views. In the unplanned stops. In the wrong turns. In the places that aren’t marked on Google Maps with a star and a “must-see.”
Instagram Tuscany is gorgeous.
Real Tuscany is richer.
Because in real Tuscany:
• the roads curve however they want
• the light changes every five minutes
• the cypress trees look magnificent even when they’re not symmetrical
• the silence is a character in itself
• and the best moments usually happen when you stop trying to recreate someone else’s photo
When I finally returned home, I had a camera full of images—some perfect, some slightly crooked, some blurry because Kayla and Jila decided to nudge me at the exact wrong moment, as usual. But the best part of the day wasn’t the photo. It was the feeling. The feeling of being in a place where beauty shows up without warning. The feeling of remembering that the journey (and the turning around… twice) is half the joy. The feeling of being inside Tuscany’s real rhythm, not the polished version. And if you come to Podere La Svolta and want to find that road, I’ll happily give you directions. Just know that you’ll probably miss it the first time. And maybe the second. But trust me: the detours are where Tuscany hides its secrets.
And comunque… you’ll find your own perfect road along the way.
